Akshaya Tritiya – Understand It’s Significance

Akshaya Tritiya  Is a significant day for the Hindus and people in general around the sub-continent India. The word ‘AKSHAYA’ means Fresh and ‘TRITYA’ means Third. From the Lunar cycle perspective, Tritya is the third day of the Lunar cycle. Before we get into understanding the Numerological and Astrological significance of this day, let us go back and understand the importance of this day through legends.

Legend # 1
Amongst the 9 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the sixth (6) and Venus (Shukra) representation of the incarnation is Parasurama. He is said to be the Chiranjeevi (immortal) and is said that he will reappear as the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu as ‘Kalki’ at the end of the Kali-yuga. He balanced the cosmic equilibrium by defeating the Kshatriya class twenty-one (21) times. He was also the teacher of Drona Acharaya, Bhishma, and Karna. Ashshay Tritya is said to be the tithi of his birth.

According to the Puranas, Maha Rishi Ved Vyasa started reciting the epic of Mahabharat to Lord Ganesha on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritya.

Legend # 3
During the 14 years of exile of the Pandavas, one day after offering prayers to Surya did the eldest son ‘Yudhisthra’ secured a bowl of rice. After finishing their meal did they have a visitor, Rishi Durvasa to whom they were supposed to feed. However, they just had a single grain of rice in their pot and Draupadi seek help from Lord Krishna, and in return, Lord Krishna blessed for the pot to be always full.

Legend # 4
It is also said that on this day Lord Krishna visited his childhood friend, Sudama who belonged to a poor family. Looking at the devotion and sincere friendship of Sudama, Lord Krishna blessed him with unlimited wealth.

The half-brother of Ravana, Kubera is said to have received the position of ‘God of Wealth’ on this day.
